As a STEM educator, I have committed to educational practices that support the
development of all students towards science literacy. In my perspective, a diverse classroom contains a body of students whose perspectives and life experiences are different from my own. Applying equitable teaching practices allows for each student in a diverse classroom to reach their potential and feel included. For me to authentically pursue this commitment I recognize that I will constantly need to reflect and evaluate how to best assist and communicate to my students. One phrase I have eliminated to better fit an inclusive classroom is the use of ‘hey guys’ as an attention grabber. This is a small part of my efforts to use ungendered language. I also plan on using a variety of assessment methods to ensure that
students are given an equitable opportunity at presenting their understanding. Using a mixture of observation, product, and conversation helps ensure that students are best able to communicate their understanding of the content. Another way I plan on supporting all learners is by trying to incorporate multiple means of motivation. Although many students are motivated by grades and content, many students struggle to find value in the knowledge they are learning. There are two main methods I have tried to include in my practice to help include
all students. The first is by presenting the content in my class in a UDL format. I believe fostering a flexible learning environment helps motivate individual learners by providing them with choice and control in their education. The second method I have been looking into is the idea of gamification as a means of motivation. A gamified class recognizes that play is an integral part of learning. I have noticed that play and fun are often removed from classes in hopes that the students will be interested in the content on its own, without considering that
this is rather than an integral part of the learning process for some individuals. Overall, I hope that applying these techniques will help me foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive classroom that produces scientifically literate students.
